City Hires Deborah Smith as Treasurer
The City of Fairhope has a new city treasurer. As of July 1, Deborah A. Smith replaced Nancy Wilson who retired after nearly 12 years with the city.

Fairhope’s Elderberry Festival Returns
The Fairhope Museum of History invites one and all to celebrate the humble elderberry at the 7th annual Elderberry Festival, Saturday, August, 8. Festivities run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the museum, with demonstrations, tastings, a pie-eating contest, music, and more throughout the day.

The City of Fairhope's Education Advisory Committee will host a Community Forum on Education in Fairhope
The agenda will include a presentation by the EAC illustrating how the City of Fairhope has contributed to the five Fairhope schools over the past three years. Beginning in fiscal year 2012-2013, the city has contributed $350,000 a year to the schools, funding everything from technology at Fairhope Elementary to textbooks for the Advanced Placement program at Fairhope High School. In addition, the city provides approximately $500,000 a year in in-kind services to the school. The presentation will also include the metrics the EAC established, with input from Fairhope principals, to measure the effectiveness of the funding and to guide the schools in their requests for funding.

Research Project is Inventorying Fairhope’s Urban Trees to Quantify Their Benefits
Tree shade reduces energy bills, leaves and roots mitigate storm water by intercepting rain, and trees alleviate air pollution. These are all commonly understood benefits of our community trees. However, a community tree inventory is required to understand exactly how much energy is saved, the extent to which storm water effects are mitigated, and the quantity of carbon stored by limbs and trunk.
