The City of Fairhope Animal Control Department staff works to protect stray, injured, abused, and unwanted animals. Their job of protecting animals and the community involve education and working with law enforcement to protect people and pets in a family. They investigate animal-related complaints to be sure that animals are receiving adequate care, rescue trapped, injured  or abandoned animals, investigate animal cruelty complaints, and help place unwanted animals in loving homes.

Where do I go to reclaim my lost pet? If your pet is impounded by Fairhope Animal Control you will need to go to 555 South Section Street during business hours which are Monday – Friday 7 am – 4 pm. Animal Control is closed Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. You can also call (251) 929-0354 during business hours or for immediate assistance during business hours call 251-928-8003.

Pets can be a wonderful addition to your life. If you are thinking about getting a pet, please consider adopting from a shelter. Shelter pets make great companions, and you will be saving the life of an abandoned or neglected animal. All animals at our shelter were impounded and not reclaimed by their owner, strays, unwanted or they were turned into us by people who could no longer care for them. Our vision is to give abandoned and neglected pets a second chance to live a long and healthy life, in a safe loving home.

The City of Fairhope Animal Shelter is operated under contract by The Haven No-Kill Animal Shelter in a public-private partnership. The Haven is a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit animal welfare organization and provides knowledgeable staff who care for the stray cats and dogs. The Haven has operated the animal shelter since 2000. 

The Haven works towards creating a day when euthanasia is no longer used as a means to control the pet overpopulation. Their team collaborates with the City of Fairhope Animal Care and Control Officer to continue to increase their shelters save rate. Specifically, by caring for the City's stray cats and dogs, accepting found animals, and assisting pet owners with lost and found pet issues, the Animal Care and Control Officer can focus more time "out in the field" enforcing local animal ordinances and protecting and educating Fairhope citizens on animal related issues.

Additionally, every animal that is adopted by The Haven is sterilized and micro-chipped. Sterilization of every animal is proven to be one of the top three strategies to creating and sustaining a no-kill community. Micro-chipping increases the chances of the pet being reunited with their owners should they become lost. This also reduces the costs to care for the animals should the animal be impounded at the animal shelter as the owner can be contacted and be reunited within less than 24 hours.

The Haven is funded by private donations, grants, fundraisers, and support from the City of Fairhope to manage internal operations and care for the stray animals. This public and private relationship is a business model that has been admired by others in the industry thanks to life-saving efforts of volunteers and small but dedicated staff. The Haven's team promote adoptions at the animal shelter and multiple monthly off-site events. The rescue group works with like-minded shelters, rescue groups, and animal advocates to educate our community and help end pet homelessness.

Pet License—Tag and collar required (Municipal Code of Ordinances 5-22)

All dogs and cats owned and kept within the city, and all dogs and cats brought in or permitted to come within the city, shall wear a collar to which shall be attached a numbered tag issued by the city. License are $1.25 each and may be purchased at City Hall. City Hall is located at 161 North Section Street in Fairhope and is open Monday - Friday from 8 a .m. to 5 p.m.
