On November 13, 2023 the Fairhope City Council approved to change the name of the Triangle property to “Flying Creek Nature Preserve” to more adequately reflect the new park design.

Project Description:
The City of Fairhope is pleased to announce the commitment to preserve, enhance, and restore a 72-acre parcel of land between Veterans Boulevard and Fly Creek as a nature park. In keeping with the vision of Fairhope’s founders to enhance community by reserving the best land for public use, this beautiful, forested habitat will provide an escape from the built environment, and a return to nature within a unique forest and riparian ecosystem. Amenities will be designed to provide passive recreation and educational opportunities for the citizens and visitors of Fairhope.
In 2022, the City received a $1M GOMESA grant to kick-start the first phase of the planning, design and construction of Flying Creek Nature Preserve. Two local firms (Thompson Engineering and Watershed) were selected to create a Master Plan for the property. Phase 1 is currently in the planning process and will include multi-use nature trails, a connection to the Eastern Shore Trail, outdoor classrooms for educational enrichment opportunities, a trailhead with informational kiosk, a bicycle repair station, a new restroom pavilion, and a low-impact development parking area. All site elements will be nestled in the existing forested habitat, and sited to minimize impacts to the existing trees and native plants. A 7-acre area of the site will be restored and managed as a longleaf forest that will provide a unique habitat type for wildlife and native plants. A pedestrian underpass will be placed below Veteran’s Drive to provide future access to the 36-acre adjacent parcel of land.

Other program elements contemplated for future phases may include the following:
•Kayak/Canoe Launch
•Nature Center
•Bird Blinds
•Creek Overlooks
•Additional Trails
•Informational/Wayfinding Signage
•Seating/Rest Areas
•Other Site Amenities

A Steering Committee has been created to assist the Design Team in assuring the Master Plan provides the most benefit for all. The Committee is comprised of representatives from Fairhope City Council, City of Fairhope Public Works, Parks and Recreation Department, Fairhope Pedestrian and Bicycle Committee, Fairhope Environmental Advisory Board, Park and Recreation Board, Junior City Council, as well as active citizens involved in the biking and recreational communities.
