Requiem by Maurice Durufle, featuring the St. James Choir with Jeff Clearman, organ, Jose Sunderland, cello and Robin Isherwood, Timpani.

Five months after Paris was liberated, Duruflé’s father died. This gave impulse to the completion of his greatest work, the Requiem, published in 1948 and dedicated to the memory of his father. Composed entirely on Gregorian themes, all nine movements are based on the missa pro defunctis, evoking memories of the disciplines learned by the choirboy prodigy. In this intense work the St. James Choir will be accompanied by Durufle’s intricate organ score, cello and timpani. The program also features Charles Gounod’s Sanctus setting from his St. Cecilia Mass with St. James soloist Rebecca Stevens, and two works by California composer Craig Phillips.
