FAIRHOPE CITY POOL TO OFFER LIFE GUARD CERTIFICATION CLASSES IN MARCH, APRIL
The City of Fairhope Municipal Pool will offer a lifeguard certification class beginning on Monday, April 11 and ending on Friday, April 15. The class will be held nightly between 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Students aged 15 and older may take the class. The cost of lifeguard certification is $225 and includes 2 years of certification, CPR/AED training and all materials. Payment is not due until the first day of class. Classes will be taught by Red Cross instructor and City contractor Michael Rogers.
On Monday, April 11, participants will be expected to pass a pre-course swimming test in order to continue with the rest of the course. This test requires you swim 300 continuous yards (100 yards of Freestyle (front crawl), 100 yards of Breaststroke, and 100 yards of any combination of those two strokes. You must also swim 20 yards (either Freestyle or Breaststroke), retrieve a 10-pound object from 7-10 feet of water, and return 20 yards while holding it above the water with both hands and keeping your head above the water within 1 minute 40 seconds. You must tread water for 2 minutes with hands out of the water. Participants must wear a swimsuit, and bring a towel, a change of clothes, pen and paper.
