Since 1997, communities across the country have come together on November 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day. More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States. One day to educate and motivate. One day to get our neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together. One day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year.
Fairhope is doing its part for America Recycles Day, Saturday, November 15, 2014. “That day, from 10am to 2pm, we will have a lot of recycling activities at the Public Works yard (555 S. Section Street), including receptacles for all types of recyclable items, a shredder truck, a used-bike silent auction, and information to help people recycle on a daily basis,” said Dale Linder, Fairhope Environmental Officer. “We invite not only city residents but those from outlying areas to come take advantage of the day.”
The theme for this year is “Yes, Fairhope Recycles—Let’s Do It!” Nancy Anderson, chairman of the city’s recycling committee, is fully behind that statement. “This is something we all can do, it doesn’t take any more effort than tossing something in the garbage, and it can make such a positive difference for our city and our environment. Fairhope was one of the first cities in Alabama to offer curbside recycling. We’ve been doing this as a service to residents since 1992,” Anderson said. “I’m very proud that my city offers this.”
Big news for Fairhope Recycling is that the City now accepts all types of plastic except for plastic bags. “Any plastic containers—bottles, jugs, jars, lids, etc.—can now be put in with your plastics for curbside pickup or brought to America Recycles Day,” Anderson said. “This is huge and will really help keep items out of the landfill.”
All Fairhope area residents are invited to drop off the following acceptable electronic items.
- Computer Monitors / CPUs / Towers and Desk tops
- Keyboards
- Printers, scanners, fax machines
- Stereo Equipment
- Television sets
- Cell phones
- Ink and Toner Cartridges
To see what can be included for curbside pickup or brought to America’s Recycle Day, visit the City’s website and pull down from Departments to Public Works, Waste Management, Recycling. The drop off site available on America Recycles Day will be “car friendly” so you do not have to tote your load very far.
