On Saturday, February 28 at 10 a.m. the City of Fairhope will host their Annual Arbor Day Celebration at Faulkner State Community College.
The Arbor Day awards ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. under the Live Oak on Bancroft at the John Borom Science Building, the Fairhope High School Jazz band will kick-off the celebration at 9:30 a.m. Arbor Day Poster Contest winners from J. Larry Newton School and Fairhope Intermediate, Treasured Tree recipients, and the 2014 Beautification Award winners will be recognized during the ceremony. The Beautification awards recognizes individuals and businesses recognized for buildings with exceptional design, renovations, and environmental stewardship efforts and the treasured tree awards honors treasured trees in Fairhope. To nominate your tree as a treasured tree, you can find an application online at www.cofairhope.com under Public Works Horticulture and Landscape.
The Wisteria Garden Club, Boy Scout Troop #47 and local master gardeners will be assisting with the tree seedling give away, set to begin after the ceremony and will continue until noon. Seedlings available this year will include the following: Red Maple, Mockernut Hickory, Atlantic White Cedar, Big-Flowered Silverbell, Blackgum, Longleaf Pine, White Oak, Pondcypress. A “Tree Questions and Answers” session will be ongoing throughout the morning.
Residents are also encouraged to celebrate Arbor Day by hitting the Tree Trails at the Beach Park trail at the Fairhope Municipal Pier or the Marietta Johnson tree trail on Faulkner’s campus. Information on the tree trails will be available at Arbor Day.
Also in celebration of Arbor Day, residents can get free Christmas tree mulch at the Public Utilities Warehouse located at 555 South Section Street between 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring their own container.
